Endurance running workouts are a fact of life for serious athletes. In order to maximize the efficiency of your muscles, you need to push them harder and farther than they have ever gone before. But because of this stress that you're putting on your body, you need to make sure that you are properly fueling and hydrating during the workout time. Since you're going to be on the treadmill or on the road longer with endurance running workouts, you need to be ready to replenish your body's energy stores.
How to drink on a run
Keeping your body hydrated is one of the most important things you can do during a running workout, especially in runs longer than one hour. To do this, you will need to bring a bottle of water with you on your run and sip it every now and then to maintain hydration. But the trick is that you don't want to drink too much as this can lead to problems as well. So, if you're concerned that you may not be able to regulate the amount of water you're drinking, it might be better for you to bring along diluted sports drink.
With a diluted sports drink, you will be able to maintain the proper balance of electrolytes during endurance running workouts as well as hydration. But it's harder to over-hydrate yourself in this manner.
Eating on the run
When you're out on the road or the trails for a longer period of time with endurance running workouts, you will need to eat something in order to maintain your electrolyte levels as well as your energy levels. As you run, you are burning off calories, so you need to put those calories back into your body. Some common ways that runners fuel their workouts include:
But what you might want to realize is that not all of these foods will be right for you. Some runners have troubles digesting some of these foods because they are high in protein. This can lead to an upset stomach that will hinder the run. Experiment with a few foods before you use them during a race setting.
Endurance running workouts are an entirely new set of circumstances for the body. And to make sure that you're not taking more out of it than is absolutely necessary, you need to learn how to properly fuel and hydrate those hard working muscles.
