Healthy eating for outdoor fitness needs to be at the top of your list of priorities if you plan to hike. While it may seem like your fitness would be your primary concern, if you're not fueling your 'in shape' body, you're not going to get very far in your workouts. There are three main components to healthy eating for outdoor fitness: calories, hydration, and balance. And since you'll be out on your own in the wilderness, you will also want to make sure these healthy eating options are easy to carry.
Calories = Energy
When you're heading out in the forest for a long run or hike, you need to be concerned about calories. Healthy eating for outdoor fitness begins with the right amount of calories to replace those you lose while exerting energy. If you can, try to use an online calories burned calculator to see how many calories you will be burning during your workout time – an estimate is fine. You should then try to bring that many calories with you when you're out and about.
Some easy options are:
Drink up
When you're learning about healthy eating for outdoor fitness, you probably already know that water is important. To help you carry this more easily, try to invest in a backpack water bladder that will allow you to move from one point to another without heavy water bottles weighing you down. You may also want to include some diluted sports drink when you're walking or running for long periods of time. This helps to maintain the right electrolyte balance and also tastes good.
Balance is the key to survival
Healthy eating for outdoor fitness is a combination of the right foods to maintain your energy. Your body requires a specific balance of nutrients like protein, carbohydrates, salts, and sugars in order to keep its energy up. To make sure you are giving your body what it needs, you want to combine foods when you are eating. This means that you want to eat or drinking something with salt in it as well as drinking plain water. This will make sure you don't have too much water or too much salt in your body.
By packing light, you can bring healthy eating for outdoor fitness with you. Pretzels are light as are energy gels. Distribute them around your body for the maximum benefit and access.
