Junior high running workouts are far more intense than they used to be. While at first, these workouts were focused only on speed, with better research and education, these workouts are now just as difficult as professional workouts. But when you're trying to make the most of junior high running workouts, you will want to focus on three things: speed, endurance, and stamina. Because together, these three things add up to a winning school team.
Speed it up
It seems obvious that you should focus on speed during junior high running workouts, especially when you want to win. But speed is more than just shaving off time from your personal record. To increase your speed, you need to begin to run at a faster speed more often than you are already used to doing. Try to find ways to add speed intervals to your workouts. Every five minutes, try running sprints of speed to see just how many you can do during a workout and then try to increase this number each time you head out with the team.
Endurance wins the race
When you're in a competitive team, you need to be able to outlast others in your field. But while everyone else might be focusing on only speed in their junior high running workouts, you will give yourself an advantage by thinking about endurance too. Try increasing the length of your workouts as much as you can, for example. After working out with the team, try to run longer to see just how far you can go. When you're working out on your own, try to go further and further each time.
Stamina isn't just endurance
By combining more speed and endurance challenges into junior high running workouts, you will be increasing your stamina. But there are also other ways that you can improve your stamina off the track or the trail. Try heading into the weight room or doing cross training sports in order to build up your lung capacity and workout other muscles besides the ones you use for running. The more variety you have, the more stamina you will gain, and fewer injuries will occur.
No matter why you're interested in junior high running workouts, you need to realize that there is more to it than simply being in the front of the pack. By taking the time to realize what the pros do, you can win the next race for your team.
