Why is nutrition for pregnant women important? It is important that a pregnant woman understand that her nutrition directly influences the course of her pregnancy and normal fetal development of her baby.

For most normal pregnancies, the first half of pregnancy is mostly concerned with quality, while in the second half of her pregnancy quantity is also an issue to ensure fetal growth.

Good nutrition for pregnant women should be set up at the very start of her pregnancy.

Nutritional Requirements

The body of a pregnant woman is subject to greater demands in order to ensure fetal development. For this reason a daily increase of 150 calories in food consumption is recommended at the start of pregnancy, which will eventually reach an extra 250 calories a day by the end of pregnancy.

During pregnancy, weight gain is normal, however the woman should not let herself starting "eating for two" as was once the norm.

Normal Weight Gain

The average weight gained is between 20 to 26 lbs, although there is a natural variation between individuals. With overweight women, it may be less, while thinner women may gain more.

Energy Nutrition for Pregnant Women

Glucose is the basic component of carbohydrates, which is the main source of energy drawn on by the fetus. A daily intake of carbohydrates in the form of bread, pasta, or fruit is needed for a problem-free pregnancy. Fats with essential fatty acids are critical for the development and functioning of the baby's nervous system.

It is important to limit the amount of sugar that is taken into the body. Sugar is often thought of as an energy source but refined sugar does not provide you with the level of better sources.

You may also need to have more iron and folic acid during pregnancy. Your doctor or health nurse will assist you in determining if your levels of iron and folic acid are on track or not. If they are not, you will receive information and instructions on how to get those important elements back in line.

As you can see proper nutrition for pregnant women is a very important part of any pregnancy. In fact, it might very well be one of the very most important issues that you will have to address while carrying your baby.
